When your fiber arrives at the mill, we will have a good look at it before we take it in to begin processing.
Make sure your fibers are:
- well skirted, and have very little vegetable material when you send them to us. The nicer the fiber you send us, the nicer your end product will be.
- roughly the same length. We accept fibers that are between 2 inches and 6 inches, but normally you will not have fibers that have both the shortest fibers and the longest fibers in the same fleece.
We will not accept:
- fleece that shows evidence of wool moths or wool moth larva
- fibers with a lot of vegetable material and deeply ingrained mud. We weigh your fibers before we wash them. Washing fees are based on incoming weight. We do not pick anything out before we weigh it.
- fibers that have wood shaving or rocks from bedding. Rocks and wood chunks can damage our equipment.
- fibers that break easily. Take a couple of locks from your fleece and tug them with a good strong tug. The locks should snap and not come apart. If they shred, they may be too delicate for machine processing. Super shready fleeces will not be processed.
Fleece that is inappropriate for the mill can be shipped back to you at your expense, or donated to a local company that takes these fleeces and makes them into soil amendment pellets. The best choice is to send fibers that will not have to be returned or recycled.
